The home stretch…

It may be hard to believe (or maybe you can’t believe it has taken this long) but we are clearly approaching the end the of the school year.  The weather has turned warmer, testing is in full swing, and the calendar is filling up with the many activities that mark “Spring Time” at the middle school.  It is an exciting time for both students and staff.  It is a time when student behavior ratchets up a notch.  They are more exuberant and active.  At the same time, many of us (adults) have only one or two nerves that have not been frayed by the daily interaction with middle-schoolers. Yet, we still have seven weeks to go, and we need to be reminded about what it will take to end this school year on a positive note for everyone.

First, be visible, particularly between classes in the hallways and in the lavatories. Please make sure that you are in your assigned areas on time for morning and afternoon duties.  Your mere presence will go a long way to reduce opportunities for unfortunate situations to occur.

Second, be vigilant (not really the same thing as being a vigilante).  Keep your eyes and ears open.  Listen to what is going on around you.  Handle – or report – those things that are important.  Use your best judgment to screen out those things that you see or hear that are relatively insignificant.  (Hint: If you haven’t made an issue of something prior to now, now is not the time to do so.)

Third, maintain your professionalism.  Remember that everyone, students included, expect you to be the ones who maintain composure and control.  Take lots of deep breaths, get assistance, do whatever you can to de-escalate (or at least not escalate) situations that arise.

Finally, remember that you choose the attitude with which you will approach each day (Make it a great day…or not, the choice is yours).  If our goal is to maintain a level of calmness during the remainder of the year, then it is up to us to make it happen.  Thanks in advance for helping to make it a great end of the school year.
